The Gettysburg Address was a speech delivered by Abraham Lincoln on November 19, 1863. This speech given by Lincoln turned out to be his most famous and one he is remembered for. Many still make references to his speech in their own speeches. While the speech was not very long, it still made a lasting imprint on everyone then, and now. Through the speech, he talks about human qualities to create an understanding of the people who have fought for us to have our freedom. He doesn't want us to take any of the things we have for granted. Lincoln wants us to move forward while also keeping those people in mind as we do so. Ironically, as he is talking about having the country move forward, he talks about the past to do just that.
During Lincoln's speech, he also makes reference to the declaration of independence. To open his speech he says the famous words, "Four score and seven years ago." Here, he is talking about the year 1776, which is when we won our independence. Through this point he is focusing on the idea that "all men are created equal." He uses this to further bring out his ideas on human qualities.
While this speech is extremely short, consisting of only around 250 words, the words he recites leave a lasting impression. His carefully crafted speech created "a new birth of freedom" for those in the United States, as he did not merely talk for those in the Union who were struggling during the Civil War, but also for all the citizens, to have true equality.
I think Lincoln's speech truly left us speechless. I find it quite remarkable that someone could create such an exquisite speech with as few words as Lincoln did. I believe that his speech will continue to wow people for years to come.
